Several members of the Dallas Police have joined forces to help in the fight against childhood cancer with a “Brave the Shave” event. Deputy Chief James Scott Walton formed a team with his fellow officers in hopes to raise money for cancer research. “I think we really have a desire to be there for people who are at their most vulnerable. We have dedicated our lives to standing between these people and those that would try to take advantage of them. Raising funds for childhood cancer research is no different,” commented Walton.
Working with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, Dallas Police rallied together May 28th at the Trinity Hall Irish Pub and Restaurant. Their goal was $2,500, but they smashed that amount by raising $5,980. Their latest tweet praises the officers involved while giving thanks to those who have donated.
For some officers, cancer has touched their lives through family and friends. Others felt compelled to join in on the worthy cause. Officer Monica Cordova lost her 14 year old niece to cancer, and wanted to join the team so other families could be spared the heartache.
Major Max Geron reflected on how he would feel if his children, ages 4 and 8, were diagnosed with cancer. “I wanted to be the kind of support that I would hope for were that ever to happen to my kids.”
The event is similar to a marathon. People submit donations to help push officers to take the plunge and shave their heads. The more money raised, the more officers go bald. Everyone was getting into the spirit including Lindsay Button, a pediatric oncology nurse from Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
“These kids and their fight with cancer [are] so very near and dear to my heart,” she said. “I figured I would take a stand, raise money to help raise research funds for these kiddos, and while I’m doing it shave my head and show my support for the battle that they’re going through.”
Button will be going back to work on Tuesday sporting her new, bald look. She’ll be foregoing the wig like the officers to continue showing support for kids with cancer.
All of the proceeds will be donated to St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The organization is currently at $22 million raised, compared to $38 million last year. It’s impressive given that we’re only 3 months into the New Year. While the shaving event has ended for Dallas Police, donations are still being accepted.
